Who Are the Ascended Masters? -- Some Informal Notes on an Esoteric Subject

In the spiritual blogosphere we often talk about ”ascended masters”. So then, who are these masters? This is a basic orientation on the subject.

1. Light Winning Over the Dark

There is good and there is evil. Currently the planet is in the grip of an evil cabal (the military industrial complex, NWO, illuminazi). But the forces of Light are, as always, out and about. The dark cabal can’t win. Mankind is walking towards the light, both spontaneously and in a more guided fashion. And in the case of guiding this is done by devas, positive aliens, angels and ascended masters. Mankind is led on by benevolent forces.

This post will focus on the just mentioned ascended masters, who and what they are. When reading channelings you meet them: Saint Germain, El Morya, Djwal Kul, Sananda etc. They are not to be confused with archangels, ”the planetary hierarchy”, sporting names such as Gabriel, Michael and Metatron. These venerable angels I can talk about some other day. Ascended masters, the subject of this article, for their part are human beings, having lived successive lives on Earth, in the process gaining wisdom, compassion and enlightenment by studies, initiations and by simply living a will-powered, conscious life, controlling their every thought and emotion.

With all these glorious lives behind him the master has eventually ascended, risen above the material world to continue his existence in a higher realm -- in Nirvana. Jesus Christ for example ascended at the end of his life (shown in Luke 24:51). And from this higher state he and his ascenced brothers and sisters can communicate with humanity; as glorified gurus the ascended masters are always there to guide us, through channelings (= telepathy) and sometimes by appearing in our midst in etheric form.

The collective of ascended masters is sometimes called: The Great White Brotherhood.

2. The Ascended Masters

The process of living enlightened lives and then ascending isn’t always one-way. This may be a technicality. However, the ascended masters can, if they so desire, temporally go back for another life as a human being. The venerable Saint Germain for example lived many lives on earth as a spiritual teacher (as for example Merlin, Samuel and Francis Bacon). And in this last life he is said to have ascended on May 1, 1684. However, according to The Summit Lighthouse infosite, this spirit ”sought and was granted a dispensation from the Lords of Karma to return to earth in a physical body.” And now he became what he is known as, le Comte de Saint Germain, mystery man of Europe, master of the Aquarian Age.

But Saint Germain thus returning was maybe a special case. As for living successive lives and then ascending, finally and definitively, the being called El Morya ascended in 1898. His last life was as a Rajput prince, the selfsame El Morya, later becoming a monk and a spiritual master. Before that his series of incarnations sported names such as Abraham, king Arthur, Thomas Becket and sir Thomas More.

El Morya ascended in 1898. And he hasn’t (like Saint Germain) returned in a bodily form since. But as an ascended master he is still active, still in contact with humanity through channelings.

3. The Perennial Tradition

Information about the ascended masters can be gathered from many sources. The Theosophists (the movement founded by Madame Blavatsky, 1831-1891) for their part had a stable connection with ascended masters like Kuthumi and Djwal Kul. Further on we have an institution like Church Universal and Triumphant, founded in 1975 by Elizabeth Clare Prophet (1939-2009). CUL practice the teachings from ascended masters like Saint Germain.

Now, let it be clear: I’m an unaffiliated writer, a free spirit not belonging to any organization or party. But for this overwiev of some ascended masters I’ve for example used the website of this church, labelled The Summit Lighthouse. CUT/TSL is a system of spiritual wisdom applying the teachings of the ascended masters, and as an adept steeped in the perennial tradition I find this wisdom quite in sync with what I’ve learned from the Bible, the Upanishads, Plotinos, Meister Eckart, Goethe and Ernst Jünger. I’m not affiliated with CUT, however, they do have some useful info in this respect.

4. Some Masters

So then, where shall I begin this survey? The facts about the successive lives of the ascended masters gets kind of massive. But I’ll focus on the five I’ve already mentioned: Kuthumi, Djwal Kul, Saint Germain, El Morya and Jesus Christ.

A. Kuthumi

Kuthumi was an Indian-Kashmirian brahmin, the resident other-wordly master of Madame Helena Blavatsky. In his earlier lives Kuthumi had been farao Thutmos III (ruled 1479-1425 BC), Pythagoras (570-495 BC), Persian magician Balthasar (one of the three magi) and Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (1592-1666). [Thutmos III:s grandson Amenhotep III (ruled 1417-1379) for his part was the reincarnated Serapis Bey; Serapis Bey is another ascenced master, however I will not talk about him today.]

B. Djwal Kul

Djwal Kul was a Tibetan master in the Brotherhood of Mahâtmas. Like Kuthumi he was one of the three magi, Djwal Kul having been Caspar. (The third magi, Melchior, was El Morya, see below.)

C. Saint Germain

Saint Germain is one of the most interesting ascended masters, mostly because of his western profile. He lived his successive lives mostly in the western world which makes him eminently relateable to me (I am a Swede and a European).

One of Saint Germains earliest lives was as the Biblical prophet Samuel, the last of the Hebrew judges and instigator of the Jewish kingdom with names such as Saul and David. Then Samuel got reincarnated in Britain as Merlin the magician. There’s some stories to tell about this, but not here. If possible I will return to this subject, the spiritual-perennial side of Merlin, king Arthur, Camelot and all.

In one of his later lives Saint Germain was sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Accoroding to the channeling ”Sananda 22-11-13” sir Francis was an heir to the British throne and as a king he would have accomplished spiritual feats, moving mankind ahead. But he was reportedly thwarted in this enterprise by the House of Red Shield.

Francis Bacon wrote ”The New Atlantis” (1624), a utopian tale envisioning a land of enlightenment, piety and communal spirit, a vision somewhat realized in the United States of America. In a later life Saint Germain is said to have been none other than Christopher Columbus, the man who discovered America.

Then, finally, this spirit was incarnated as le Comte de Saint Germain, active in France and America in the late 18th, early 19th century. Well versed in languages he was also a virtuous musician, alchemist and esotericist. He is mentioned in diaries and reports at the time, for example by Roussean and Voltaire whom he met.

D. El Morya

El Morya was a Rajput prince of spiritual powers. In his earlier lives he is said to have been emperor on Atlantis (about 220.000 BC). Then he was the patriarch Abraham, Melchior, one of the three magi, king Arthur, Thomas Becket (archbishop of Cantebury, 1118-1170), Shams Tabrizi, the teacher of poet Rumi (Tabrizi lived 1185-1284), Mughal emperor Akbar (1542-1605) and the Irish poet Thomas Moore. Moore among other things wrote ”Believe Me if all Those Endearing Young Charms”. His last life was, as I said, as the Rajput prince El Morya, finally ascending to the higher realms in 1898.

Russian artist Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) is said to have been a channel for El Morya. Through his master Roerich said that the Tibetan capital Lhasa was connected with Inner Earth and its city Shamballa (source: Joshua David Stone, ”Agartha in the Hollow Earth”). Roerich was a painter of no mean skill as the illustration on top of this entry shows. He was a truly spiritual artist.

E. Jesus Christ

As intimated Jesus Christ is also an ascended master. His name now is Sananda Imanuel. However , there are different opinions about this. According to Steve Beckow Sananda is... ”one of the Kumaras from Venus, like Sanat Kumara. He overlit Jesus during the latter’s ministry.” But parallell to Sananda there are channelings of Jesus Christ proper so this might be a technicality. Here for example is a June, 2014 channeling of Jesus: "Jesus via John Smallman".

As for Christ he too is said to have lived through a succession of lives. He had earthly lives before he became Christ. But I won't go into that now.

Conclusion

After giving you this survey of some ascended masters, what is the conclusion?

Personally I find it fascinating to follow the successive, earthly lives of the ascended masters. It’s secret history come alive. It’s like a novel waiting to be written. As intimated it’s a massive amount of facts that develops before you. Solely the 18-19th century life of Saint Germain is ”like a novel” – and bearing in mind that he is still active (active in etherical form, plus being present telepathically by channelings) as Master of the Aquarian Age, makes him a character worth studying.

So I’ll maybe have a closer look at Saint Germain some time, focusing on his early modern and modern actions. Then of course there’s the information about him having been Merlin and El Morya having been king Arthur, both making Camelot into a mystery school, as TSL tells us. And this gives additional depth to an already rich narrative, the Arthur legend. There’s some info on the net about this so this could also be worth following. I’m not promising anything but personally I find this interesting, like reading a fantasy novel with profound, lasting meaning.

And this narrative character of it all is what makes me tick. I mean, in the spiritual community there are different threads, different orientations, like occupying yourself with numerology, astrology, mediation techniques etc. All these are venerable doings but as for me, being an author, I want stories to relate to. That’s what makes the ascended masters angle approachable to me. The amount of information about spiritual matters can be a bit overwhelming at times, so the biographical approach to me becomes a way to relate to it all.

Sidantal 205.

USA: New Media Triumphs, MSM Going Down, According to Jeff Berwick

I'm a Swede. Here in Sweden MSM is having trouble and new media such as Fria Tider, Flashback and the whole free internet is gaining ground. And the picture is the same in the USA. Hereby a look at a new article on the subject.

A recent article on the site The Dollar Vigilante takes a comprehensive look at US media: print, new media and TV, all getting their share. And the drift is anti-NWO, a must these days. MSM = NWO, this has got to be said again and again. [Here's a blog post in Swedish on what the New World Order is.]

The article in question is written by Jeff Berwick, editor-in-chief of The Dollar Vigilante. "When propaganda fails, humanity awakens... the fall of mainstream media" is the title.

- - -

Berwick's article begins by looking at the flagship of American print media, The New York Times. Like the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter it's in dire straits. It's going down, man...! Berwick gives us some indications of the NYT demise by way of an inhouse report. NYT is said to look with worry at new media upstarts such as...
... First Look Media, Vox, Huffington Post, Business Insider and Buzzfeed.

“They are ahead of us in building impressive support systems for digital journalists, and that gap will grow unless we quickly improve our capabilities,” the report states. “Meanwhile, our journalism advantage is shrinking as more of these upstarts expand their newsrooms.”

“We are not moving with enough urgency,” it says.

A central issue for NYT is “a cadre of editors who remain unfamiliar with the web.”

“Many desks lack editors who even know how to evaluate digital work,” the report continues.
As in Sweden print in America doesn't know what to do about the advance of the web. Berwick summarizes the problems of print like this:
The paper's model is obsolete, but even worse than the model has been the paper's lack of interest in the truth. As the US empire has grown more out of control, more dangerous, and more insane, the NYT has functioned as a fourth branch of government, a gatekeeper for a totalitarian world a la 1984 or Brave New World. But the gig is up. The world knows NYT's complicity in erecting a sick and deranged world, and unless the paper breaks major news stories and outs itself as an undeniable friend of freedom, it will continue to lose revenue. No more can NYT expect to serve the elite and its bottom line at the same time. In the age of the internet, what David Rockefeller was once grateful for is no longer possible:
We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years...It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries.
NWO-bashing galore, I like that. We have to expose the NWO, Rocky Fella and all.

- - -

After showing some statistics on how old media is mostly consumed by elderly people, Berwick goes on to say that renowned weekly Newsweek has had it:
Newsweek (which I call Newspeak) has released its last print issue. You'll remember one of Newsweek's last attempts to be relevant again was uncovering the wrong Satoshi Nakamoto as the creator of bitcoin. They found some guy with the right name in the phone book...You know, "quality journalism"...
On to TV. CNN profile Larry King has joined Russian channel RT:
CNN's viewership is at a record-low (the network recently laid off 40 journalists), while CNBC has suffered a viewership collapse as well... and this with the Dow at all time inflated highs. Imagine if the stock market were going down how low these numbers would be.

But once Larry King said that CNN would be better off showing re-runs of Spongebob Squarepants 24 hours a day, you knew it was over...

Larry King left CNN because he knew it would collapse. He left CNN for the Russian government propaganda channel, RT, because it is more respected and features more truth about the West. Twenty years ago, this would be have been unheard of for Larry King! A career-ender! Not today...Nope. Today it is a respect-earner. Oh, how things have changed...
- - -

Berwick then updates us on American new media. Under the headline "The New Media Takeover" we get this:
The New Media has taken over. Alex Jones is almost a household name and groups like Luke Rudkowski's We Are Change have revolutionized how people get information. (Editor's Note: We Are Change offers "Change Media University" to learn how to become a real investigative journalist that we highly recommend. Forget traditional school). For years now the most popular MSM personalities, like Glenn Beck, have followed the playbook of new media personalities in a bid to remain relevant. Now, in order to remain relevant people like Glenn Beck need to quote or interview people in the "alternative media".
- - -

And now for the grand finale, Berwick showing how the global "elite" has lost the info war:
It was not all that long ago that John Kerry and Zbigniew Brzezinski said that the internet, simply put, is making it hard for them to govern. Secretary of Statism, John Kerry, before a group of State Department workers told the audience that the world has been "complicated" by "... this little thing called the internet and the ability of people everywhere to communicate instantaneously and to have more information coming at them in one day than most people can process in months or a year."

According to Kerry, the internet "makes it much harder to govern, makes it much harder to organize people, much harder to find the common interest."

Z-Big echoed his sentiment, saying that public access to information stopped war with Syria.

Bill Clinton, laughingly even suggested the need for a "Ministry of Truth" over the internet, run by the US federal government, that would censor anything it did not deem to be "truth".
And that's how it's done: bashing the NWO "elite". This is what new media should be doing 24/7.

Is Obama the Mahdi?

I've stumbled upon some interesting information. Where? On the net. -- Disclaimer: I'm a free man, a Swede enjoying the Swedish laws of free speach. I'm an author ("Antropolis" 2009, "Camouflage" 2011) writing about whatever I want. I'm not affiliated to any organization, whether political, cultural or religious. As for comments on this article I welcome it. However, keep a civil tone or else I will delete it.

1. Obama the Enigma

What to make of Obama? Saint or sinner? The best or the worst? A historical president or a failure?

I dunno. At first I kind of saw his work as a repetition of the Carter administration. Then, around 2012, I read some spiritual sites. And they said that "Obama is of the light" (like Steve Beckow and Matthew).

So then, is Obama of the light? I still don't know what to make of the man. Here's a blog post in Swedish by me, trying to figure out his foreign policy at the start of his second term, in 2013.

But never mind policy as such. Now I'll discuss more mytological themes. Namely, as intimated in the headline: is Obama the Mahdi? The legendary 12th Imam?

Whatever the answer I must say that it gives you some perspective of the man.

2. The Mahdi: Background

Obama being the Mahdi is actually an old story. It's been around since 2009 or so, his first year in term.

Well then: is Obama the Mahdi? Is the US president this legendary figure, "the 12th Imam", told about in prophecies? The subject was recently brought up in journalist-and-rumour-monger, however-sometimes-enlightening Benjamin Fulford’s May 20 posting:
Increasingly embattled President Obama, for his part, is now making claims that he is the “Twelfth Mahdi,” i.e. the “ultimate savior of humankind,” they said.
Now for some background on the subject at hand: the Mahdi, the 12th imam. Wikipedia has this:
In Islamic eschatology, the Mahdi (...) is the prophesied redeemer of Islam who will rule for seven, nine or nineteen years (according to differing interpretations) before the Day of Judgment (yawm al-qiyamah / literally, the Day of Resurrection) and will rid the world of evil.

The Mahdi’s tenure will coincide with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (Isa), who is to assist the Mahdi against the Masih ad-Dajjal (literally, the “false Messiah” or Antichrist). Jesus, who is considered the Masih (Messiah) in Islam, will descend at the point of a white arcade, east of Damascus, dressed in yellow robes with his head anointed. He will then join the Mahdi in his war against the Dajjal, where Jesus will slay Dajjal and unite mankind.
Before we continue, I'd say that this traditionally-based info sets the tone rather well. If there is a Mahdi then he will bring peace. That, at least, will be my working hypothesis on the subject.

I'm no expert on the Mahdi, Islam or anything. But what I do know is that there's no place today for fire-and-brimstone-sermons, fear-mongering and all that. The NWO cabal was thwarted in their attempts to start a full-scale war in Syria in August-September 2013. And they won't succeed in provoking Russia into attacking Ukraine. Peace will prevail. That's the zeitgeist in which this news about "the Obama-Mahdi connection" is to interpreted.

3. The Mahdi Features

Wikipedia goes on to quote a 5th century Arab, a contemporary of Muhammad, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. He said this about the Mahdi:
The Mahdi is of my lineage, with a high forehead and a long, thin, curved nose. He will fill the earth with fairness and justice as it was filled with oppression and injustice, and he will rule for seven years
Looks like Obama...? Hmm, I admit it's not much to go after.

4. The Arak Document

So then. More input is needed. A site called Before It’s News had an entry in January 2014, elaborating on the Obama-Mahdi theme. The post in question is slightly fear-mongering. However, it gives you a link to something called PJ Media. There, in "Return of the Twelwth Imam" (Jan 5 2014) by David Solway, we hear about something called the Arak Codex #190001, an ancient document, newly found in a clay jar at an excavation site near the Arak nuclear facility. This document is known only to the mullahs of Iran and to Solway, it would seem.

This sounds a bit vague. I admit that. However, according to Solway, based on this information the 12th Imam has returned. And these are the signs of him:
He is half black, half white. He is tall and strides with a lope. He possesses dead eyes and prominent ears. His background is both obscure and exotic. He is persuasively eloquent and is adept at saying one thing while doing another. His head swivels from side to side when addressing the multitudes, as if reading from prepared texts no doubt lowered from on high and inscribed by the Lord or one of his angels. He gives the distinct impression of being a man-child. He is supremely confident and exudes a certain boyish charm many find irresistible. He is devoted to popular sports involving holes and nets as emblems of ensnaring. He bows frequently in false humility, cajoling the high and mighty of the earth, yet brooks no objection to his will when dissent is offered. He is to be found in many different places from one day to another. He is surrounded by loyal minions, many of whom appear to be imbeciles, who do his bidding without question or scruple. He occupies the seat of power.
Now that sounds more Obama-ish. -- As I said the source is rather vague. Let us keep that in mind.

The article in question, Solway's in PJ Media, was as the Before It's News piece alarmistic and anti-Obama. I don't share that view. But of course, you have to be diligent.

5. Obama's Mid Eastern Policy

Solway sketches the belief in question, belief in the 12th Imam returning, as a strand of Shiite Islam. That's interesting. In another article linked on Before It's News, a post from 2012 on the blog Marions Space, Mark Langfan summarizes Obama's Mid Eastern policy over the years. It's a bit alarmist but the facts and the analysis, in its broader sense, is rather eye-opening. It seems to be that Obama as US President has been running a pro-Shiite policy all the time, like making amends with Iran (= Shiite) and slightly alienating Saudi-Arabia (Sunni).

In sync with this policy Obama seems to have let Iraq turn Shiite. And he has avoided getting into war with the Shiite Assad of Syria.

What's the meaning of this?

6. Obama Taking Steps Towards Peace

The US government is in the hands of the NWO cabal. And any president has to be OK:d by this cabal. I know that. But moreover I'd say that Obama has come some way towards making peace. It isn't Peace with a capital P yet, but it's a start at dismantling the Bush War regime.

You could say: at least Obama is better than having Mitt Romney as president. Romney was moore of a NWO stooge than Obama is, I'd say. With Romney winning in 2012 we would, for example, be caught in a full-scale war with Iran by now. Obama for his part may be doing things like conducting surgical type strikes with drones in MENA, but otherwise he has retreated (Iraq, US Army getting out in 2012) and avoided to start a war (Syria, August-September 2013), parallell to substantially cutting down the US Navy, Army and Air Force.

7. Fantasy Interpreation

If Obama is some MENA Messiah I don't know. But the Mahdi rumours kind of fits in with his, shall we say, grey area nature.

As we saw in Wikipedia the 12th Imam, if he exists, will join forces with the returning Christ. The Youtube, 51 part film ”Arrivals”, made by some progressive Muslims, talks about the Mahdi in these terms. Moreover it gives the narrative a contemporary, cultural twist, applying the "Lord of the Rings" (2001-2003) movie mythology to it all. In that case Sauron is the Antichrist, Gandalf is the Mahdi and Aragorn is Jesus...!

Now as for details I for one don't think Jesus will return in the flesh. "The return of Christ" for its part is a spiritual experience, having men accepting the I Am-impulse in their souls. But maybe Christ can return in etheric body form. That's been seen before.

I'm no Muslim but as for the "Arrivals" approach, applying Tolkien's epic to modern times, I think there's some substance to it. Kinda grand and swashbuckling. But I don't know. It's an intepretation. Like the Obama-Mahdi connection itself.

8. Something Afoot

Lastly, about the Mahdi it's said that he will appear in an even, not an odd year. How about 2014 as the year of the Mahdi appearance then...?

Who knows? As you can see I leave the answer open. But I'd say that there's something afoot. These years aren't ordinary in any sense of the word: like the subtle 2012 event, elevating Mother Earth and ourselves spiritually, the twarthed NWO attempts to start WWIII and the ongoing liberation of the Westworld against the hold of the Cabal.

As you see we live in interesting times; that at least I can tell you for sure.

Kom i tidsandan, vet ja'.

Men man försatt tillfället.

Den är -- för att citera Sandy Pearlman -- "a bed-time story for the children of the damned"...!

- - -

Men regimen fortsätter...! Nejs...!

On the Marble Cliffs by Ernst Jünger

Edit, November 2014: The Australian imprint Manticore Press has published an Ernst Jünger biography that I've written. "Ernst Jünger -- A Portrait" is the name of the book. This post from earlier this year is a chapter of that book, a look at Jünger's classic "On the Marble Cliffs" from 1939.

”On the Marble Cliffs” is a complex work, existing on many levels. To be precise I don’t hold it above the rest of Jünger’s books. But of course it’s among the top five, if I should express it like that. First of all the title is very apt, combining as it does beauty with danger. Jünger himself had that ambition with the title and I must say he succeeded. As for novel titles in general ”On the Marble Cliffs” is especially rich in connotations, the marble part symbolizing tradition and beauty, the cliff part symbolizing danger and then some.

Why Did They Withhold This Book?

I’d like to start this chapter on a personal note. I’m a Swede, born in 1965. I had a mostly OK schooling in the bosom of the leftist liberal Swedish system of those times. Moreover I read the papers, I searched around for gurus and leaders, for spiritual fathers showing you the way. As for books and authors nothing really turned me on. Of course you had some English and American science fiction to lighten you up, there was a modicum of meaning and inspiration in the fantasy, crime and thriller books of the day, but the officially OK:d writers and novels all seemed to be of the doom and gloom kind.

In school and in mainstream media they told us to read Kafka, Orwell, Harry Martinson and Karin Boye. This and their contemporary epigons was considered serious, edifying fiction in those days, a monstrous monoculture of skepticism, materialism and – to add insult to injury – a spate of irony to top it off.

Now then, to put it short: what a relief it was to eventually find the books of Ernst Jünger in all this waste land of nihilism and angst. My teachers and the media had kept silent about him but I found out about him nontheless. He was after all published in Sweden in those days, in the 70’s by a certain Cavefors’ förlag.

So the Swedish versions of ”Eumeswil” and ”On the Marble Cliffs” became a watering place for me, magically conjuring up totally different lands compared to the standard fare of fiction, intimated above. Not that ”On the Marble Cliffs” for its part was a simple idyl; instead it was danger and beauty combined, it was melancholy over the corruption of a virgin land, and a fatalistic struggle ending in retreat and exile. But the overall mood of it all, the atmosphere and tenor of the book was totally different from anything I hitherto had encountered, excepting maybe Tolkien.

And of course I don’t despise Kafka and the rest. It’s just that they’re missing out on so much of reality. The kitchen sink authors lauded by the teachers of my generation were unable to even write words like ”beauty”, ”meaning”, ”essence”, ”value”, ”wonder” and ”abundance”. But Jünger had them in his vocabulary. To read them in his prose was like a revelation. That’s what makes Jünger into such a unique and unparalleled voice of our times.

What It Means To Live

The narrator and his brother are standing on The Marble Cliffs looking out over the Great Marina, a lake lined with small burgs, farmland and vineyards. To see this is what it means to live, he says:
In the early morning the fullness of the sounds penetrated up here, delicate and pregnant like things seen in a reversed binocular. We heard the bells in the cities and the guns saluting the wreathed ships sailing into the harbours, as we did the song from the pious companies going on pilgrimage to the saint statues and the flute music from a wedding procession. We heard the jackdaws croaking around the weathercocks, the crow of the rooster and the call of the cuckoo, the sound of the horns blown by the squires when the hunting pack went through the gate of the castle. How wonderful it all sounded hearing it all the way up here, how roguish, as if the world was sewn like a many-coloured fool’s cap – but also inebriating like wine in the morning.
Jünger sometimes has a tendency of making his heroes into Heroes with capital H, characters a bit too perfect, a fault that Robert Heinlein also has been accused of (in for example ”Stranger in a Strange Land”). It often becomes a bit too monumental, too rigid. However, in ”On the Marble Cliffs” Jünger made room for the common man or woman to play along in the drama, she could also have her say, like the maid Lampusa who laughs at the plant collecting of the brothers, and at their putting up little porcelain signs in the garden for every flower. She herself sows haphazardly and gets a triple harvest compared to what her tenants get, the narrator and his brother. The story gains a lot by letting the hero in this fashion seem a bit too punctilious, giving him human proportions in the process.

This book has it all: there’s a balance between milieu descriptions and reflections, between background and action, between nature and people. For instance all the minor characters feel alive, from Father Lampros and the nihilist Braquemart to Count Sunmyra and the mercenary Biedenhorn. ”On the Marble Cliffs” as a novel may have led a somewhat obsucure existence from its inception but there’s a renewed interest for it these days, as in all of Jünger’s oeuvre. There’s something timeless in its message of learnig to see a wonder in every flower and an optimate in every fellow human being, as brother Otho puts it once.

- - -

Jünger is different. There are other ways of ending a story than having the protagonist changed into a cockroach – than having a damaged spaceship steer out into nothingness – than having him say that he loves Big Brother. Instead you can give it all the human touch. At least you can try. ”Il faut essayer de vivre” as Paul Valéry said: try to live, at least try...! Voilà a fine ideal – and this without at the same time having it sounding like a Sunday school lesson, without avoiding the difficulties. With this in mind you still have to give the reader some hope.

OK, some plots may demand that all goes astray, and of course you shouldn’t bowdlerize classics like ”1984” and having them end happily. That’s not my point. But I’m fascinated by ”On the Marble Cliffs” for having such a structure that allows for anything to happen, for a piece of hope in all the darkness. That’s its forte, for instance visible in the end game with the backwoods people gaining ground as forerunners of the Forester General’s advance, the narrator’s siding with the mercenaries seeming to be a losing proposition – and the battle seeming to be lost with the Marble Cliff habitat abandoned, but not until the child has it’s say, the young Erio with his ladle hitting the kettle and calling the snakes to battle against the invading lemurs.

This is some mythical tour de force, unique in 20th century literature. It is, to quote Jünger from another context, an image of the kind that you otherwise only see in your dreams. And with the additional support of Shakespeare I’d say that ”On the Marble Cliffs” is ”the stuff that dreams are made of”, both happy dreams and nightmares. Therefore you can’t praise this novel enough.

Origins

Back in the day when Jünger was asked about the meaning of ”On the Marble Cliffs”, if it for example was about Nazism, he abjectly refused all such interpretations. The novel was a timeless comment on Power versus Spirit, on the struggle between clarity and culture versus occultism and raw brute force. That was Jünger’s constant position when asked about the underlying pattern of his novel. However, at the same time he admitted that the character prince Sunmyra anticipated count Stauffenberg. Sunmyra in the novel becomes the victim of the Forest Ranger and his shadowy forces but the narrator in the end treasures Sunmyra’s severed head, keeps it stored in a certain pot with preserving herbs and finally lays it as a cornerstone under at newbuilt church.

Sunmyra isn’t literally Stauffenberg. But the character invites to such an interpreation and Jünger himself did it, as in the war diary entry of May 1, 1945. In a wider sense he was on the track of something with having Sunmyra in the novel: an old aristocrat taking up arms against tyranny. That’s what Stauffenberg represented and Jünger knew that something like that was about – not that he knew Stauffenberg, but he did in fact meet with another dissident aristocrat before the war, a certain Adam von Trott zu Solz. In an appendix to a modern edition of ”Auf den Marmorklippen” (the appendix is dated December 10, 1972, the Ullstein edition in question is from 2006) Jünger tells us a bit vaguely about this, not naming either names, places or dates, but it seems to have been in Goslar sometime before the Second World War. Visiting his brother Fritz who lived in the same town by the Bodensee Jünger had already gone to bed when some late visitors arrived so he stayed between the sheets, letting Fritz entertain the visitors.

So Jünger himself didn’t participate in this fateful meeting but he remembered the name Adam von Trott zu Solz (he doesn’t expressly mention him in this adnote but says ”the one who later got executed”, the aristocrat in question meeting this fate in 1944) and he remembered the atmosphere that somehow could be sensed even by the half asleep author: an atmosphere of wordless consensus as he says in the appendix. And he had seen the car of the visitors approach up the wine hill, the headlights dimmed. And these dimmed vehicle lights and then some we get in the book version of the meeting, the novelized transformation of it all into ”the visit by Sunmyra”.

And some days later in Goslar, after a drinking bout with some other notables, Jünger dreamt of a string of lakeside cities on fire, the flames mirrored in the water, and this spurred the whole vision and mood of the novel eventually written in 1939: ”On the Marble Cliffs”.

So without reducing the novel into a ”roman à clef” there was some or other things, in dreams and IRL, that spilled over into the finished product. It wasn’t about Nazism but the Nazi and contemporary connections can’t be igonred. You could say: the novel is about tyranny as a phenomenon, including but not exclusively about Nazism.

Characters

”On the Marble Cliffs” displays a rich collection of characters. We have the abovementioned prince Sunmyra, pale and frail yet strong and belligerent, a romantic dreamer aroused from his sleep and ready to act against darkness, mirroring in a way the statue of the Bamberg Horseman (der Bamberger Reiter) in Bamberg cathedral: a heroic medieval knight, seemingly distraught but essentially a true rock of resistance. Mythologically he is in my book juxtaposed by the knight depicted by Dürer in his 16th century engraving ”The Knight, Death and the Devil”, a no-nonsense fighter with a literal devil-may-care attitude, a man of a hard mindset and yet no mere barbarian. And this character could be said to be represented by another ”Marble Cliff” figure: Biedenhorn, the commander of the mercenaries. The brothers at the centre of action get some help from him at the end, and before that he is lovingly depicted as the timeless solider, without higher ideals but reliable when it comes to battle and a jovial friend to his brothers in arms.

Then we have Braquemart, the nihilist and technical expert, a man without illusions but neither is he altogether a mindless barbarian. His likes were out and about in Nazi times, and they haven’t disappeared only because the Reich went down; on the contrary, the world of today seems to be goverend by Braquemarts, forming the middle management and apparatjik roles in the nihilist Empire having the westworld in its clutches. By my description Braquemart may seem like a boring acquaintance but what makes you endure the company of Braquemart and his brothers could be their sense of education and culture, their traits of ease and style. That’s what makes this man memorable, as a symbol for the mauretanian life form, this use of ”mauretanian” being a genuinely Jüngerian invention and recurring in other works such as ”Heliopolis”, the war diary and ”Eumeswil”. Mauretanians are a grey area people of educated nihilists and cunning operators, not expressly cruel but they can be that too, not altogether despicable but in all a breed of somewhat petrified souls, unable to inspire mirth, joy and happiness.

”On the Marble Cliffs” has more characters than that: the Forest Ranger, whom we never meet face to face but is said to be an archaic fellow, like an old Home Guard colonel arousing ridicule among the younger officers because of his old fashioned attire when he once a year attends the autumnal maneuvers. But who gets the last laugh in this respect, regarding the Realpolitik side of things? – The Forest Ranger more or less triumphs at the end, conquering the Great Marina. Then we have the more positive characters like father Lampros, a priest who has a small but significant role in all this, and then other supporting characters I’ve already mentioned like Erio and Lampusa. Everyone, high and low, are brought along to enact the human drama that is ”On the Marble Cliffs”.

The Adventurous Heart by Ernst Jünger -- A Timeless Classic

Edit, November 2014: The Australian imprint Manticore Press has published an Ernst Jünger biography that I've written. "Ernst Jünger -- A Portrait" is the name of the book. This post from earlier this year is a chapter of that book. -- I know something about the German author Ernst Jünger (1895-1998). For instance I've been looking at his science fiction. Moreover I've been probing the character of his spirituality. The subject of this post is Jünger's essay collection "The Adventurous Heart".

Many Jünger books defies description, living as they do in a borderline between genres and forms, consisting of reflections, anecdotes, visions and stories presented in a more or less systematic form. ”Das abenteuerliche Herz” (”The Adventurous Heart”) was the first Jünger book of this kind: short pieces of prose ranging from observations of everyday life and fiction to musings and philosophical reflections, everyhing in a precise and pedantic prose, however not pedantic as in boring but pedantic as in enchanting, if that’s possible. And it is, in Jünger’s hands.

The Master Key

The first version of ”The Adventurous Heart” was published in 1929. In 1938 a second version was issued, having had 220 of the 263 pages of the original revised or changed altogether. This was problably a ruse to evade the eagle eye of the Nazi censorship. So definition-wise this was hardly a revision; the 1938 version is virtually a new book.

Be that as it may. The 1938 version is now a classic in itself, being for example the one translated into English by Telos Press in 2012. And in this entry I focus on the 1938 version too. The translations into English presented here, however, are mine throughout.

One of the many intriguing pieces of this volume is ”Der Hauptschlüssel” (”The Master Key”), about the art of entering into the essence of things. This is one of many clues to Jünger's idealistic philosophy, of his partly obscure way of looking at things:
Every meaningful event looks like a circle whose periphery can be wholly measured by daylight. During the night however the periphery disappears to be supplanted by the shimmer of the phosphoric centre, like the petals of the Lunaria that Wierus tells about in his book De Praestigiis Daemonum. In the light the shape, in the twilight the creative powers appear.

In the District of the Blind

A nice short story in ”The Adventurous Heart” is ”Im Blindenviertel” (”In the District of the Blind”). Strolling in a city the narrator soon finds out that he’s in the district of the blind. One clue is a dance parlour where the mats have certain inlays of cork for the dancers to feel their way with. There’s also a bar where a blind man is kept by the proprietor as a curiosity, as a conversation partner for people to ridicule, giving him a theme to elaborate on which due to his blindness tends to end up in the wrong. The guests, the seeing, then get an easy sense of superiority.

The narrator however wants something else. And here the humanism of Jünger is shown in an unsought way. Inviting the blind man to sit down he thinks about a subject in which none of them has any advantage over the other. Finally he has it – ”and so we had a wonderful conversation during our breakfast about the un-foreseen.

Nigromontanus

”The Adventurous Heart” hasn’t aged at all, giving us the whole spectrum of the Jünger worldview in pieces rich in reflections, scenes and symbols. I’ll give you two more quotes, the first one centering on the fictional teacher Nigromontanus who has some similarities with Hugo Fischer. However, it could be said that the name ”Nigromontanus” is borrowed from a short story by Goethe. And in some way this Nigromonatnus is a kind of Jüngerian self portrait. In ”Die Vexierbilder” (”Enigmatic Images”) we hear about Nigromontani fascination with materials that change, like iridizing glass and some precious stones. But the images in question mean more than that:
He [= Nigromontanus] had a collection of masked pictures, emanating like magic out of monochrome mosaics. They were made of pebbles which during bright days couldn’t be distinguished from others, however during twilight they lit up like phosphorus. In his house he had ovens on which, when heated, proverbs in red appeared, and in his garden terrasses on which a burst of rain elicited black symbols. You could also be enjoyed by the ornaments in his room and on his tools, like the meander in which alternately the bright or the dark rock arose, or vortexes drawn on the surface now showing the observer its front and now its backside. He had transparencies on which everyday motives turned into gruelties, or where the horrifying turned into the beautiful by the rays of the light. He also liked the caleidoscope of which he had samples built, in which cut precious stones easily formed into roses and stars, a struggle between freedom and symmetry.

The Colour Blue

That’s how it is with ”The Adventurous Heart”: finely wrought gems of prose that you feel like quoting, not having much to add. So I’ll finish this blog post with yet another quote from the book in question, letting the lines speak for themselves. They are about the colour blue and all its marine manifestations:
The deep sea embodies this colour and reflects it variously, from matt cobolt to bright azure. There are seascapes of a sombre silkish hue or sapphiric lustre, then again surfaces of hyaline lustre over a bright bottom and by the cliffs' vortexes, with the stream spreading out wonderously and flashing of colours from bouquets and starfish. Any lover of the sea can recall moments of perplexity and then bright, spiritual joy before such dramas. It isn’t the water or the infinity of the water creating this joy but its divine, neptunian power living in every wave.

Som dramatikern Arthur Miller (1915-2005) sa: "An era can be said to end when its basic illusions are exhausted."

- - -

Sverigevännernas insats i dagens mediaverklighet gör stor marginalnytta.

Ondskan styr Sverige. Det går sakta, "it's a train-crash in slowmotion".

Jünger and the Craft of Science Fiction

Edit, November 2014: The Australian imprint Manticore Press has published an Ernst Jünger biography that I've written. "Ernst Jünger -- A Portrait" is the name of the book. This post from earlier this year is a chapter of that book. -- Let's talk about science fiction. I've been reading it for over 30 years. And I've written an SF novel, "Antropolis", issued in 2009. Here I take a look at Ernst Jünger and how he excelled in the craft of science fiction. He wasn't your typically genre-conscious SF writer. His books were never labelled "SF". But I'd say that he had an inborn feel for making his futuristic narratives credible.

Jünger isn’t ordinarily considered as an author of science fiction or fantasy. Authors of his calibre don’t need a specific genre as a creative or commercial support. That said it wouldn’t be totally irrelevant to apply a genre specific view of his novels taking place in future settings. Does Jünger have a talent for the craft of science fiction? That’s the subject of this entry, looking at Jünger’s inventiveness as a gadget maker. Then I look at other Jünger works and their meditations over technology and machines.

1. Jünger As An Inventor

Ernst Jünger was a remarkable man. He had a brain of his own. He was a genius of sorts, a man with the ability to amaze his audience. And that quirk is definitely there in his science fiction novels.

It’s like this: science fiction taking place in the future needs speculative settings, it needs inventions and technical gadgets of the one or the other kind. Of course it’s about more than that, you have to have characters enacting a viable plot, but as for technology it has to be explicitly present throughout. You just can’t throw in a simple ”three glass window” and leave it with that. You have to invent things and sprinkle them over the pages, creating a futuristic atmosphere. And Jünger knew this art, employing it in ”Heliopolis”, ”The Glass Bees” and ”Eumeswil” (1949, 1957 and 1977 respectively). His inventing activity in these novels is so prolific that I have to make a survey.

Starting with ”Heliopolis” you find things like:
. The permanent film, both a kind of TV showing moving pictures and a sort of computer showing ”rolling text and numbers”. This last feature home computers were unable to do even in 1980, so this strikes me as kind of prophetic for a novel from 1949.
. The phonophor, a handheld computer functioning as a telephone, passport, ID, ticket and insignia of rank. Additionally it can download music and text from ”the Central Archives”, that is, a kind of internet – not bad a vision being conceived by a layman in 1949. The phonophor was worn in the breast pocket partly visible and the different colours of its shell indictated the wearer’s rank.
. Thermic metal, a mysterious element heating things with its internal heat. It’s an invention of the magical kind, a thing you would like to have without being able to explain it. That’s how many SF authors work, like throwing in soaring cars and space travel faster than light: without being explained in detail they still seem probable and give the tale a futuristic feel.
Additional technical gadgetry of ”Heliopolis” are beam weapons, a metal melting device (”thermic concave mirror”), soaring vessels and then some. Even if the machines in question aren’t central to the plot they embellish it, giving it atmosphere and futuristic ambiance.

Moving on to ”The Glass Bees" we have these selfsame creatures as a symbol of technological marvels. They are an early example of micro- if not nano technology. Miniature insects in this future setting are occupied with cleaning ducts, counting money, handle radioactive material etc, even sucking nectar out of flowers. The latter however was a sign of their limitations since the flowers died after the act.

As intimated Jünger early on was into the achievements of information technology: the principle of internet, to have access to all the collected cultural treasures of mankind in your pocket, is fully realized in the world of ”Heliopolis”. In ”Eumeswil” he developed the concept even further; there, in the Luminary (”das Luminarium”), you could punch in a time and a place on the keyboard and then have it played before you. It was like an advanced, graphic google search; for instance, punching in ”Normandy, dawn, June 6 1944” you would see the allied invasion fleet approaching the sandy beaches in a virtual reality fashion.

Jünger used this library of historical scenes to elaborate on historical presence and the role of the historian, making the novel – ”Eumeswil” – a rich storehouse of historical images and historiographical attitudes. As for conjuring scenes out of history today’s computer technology is able to do that, portraying scenes of historical figures with real-life actors and having the face computer animated. Then, in the ensuing production, you could for example see Rommel as real as IRL walk over a desert battlefield.

2. Machine Dreams

The symbol of today’s information technology (computers, internet), someone has suggested, is the net, maybe seen as a spider’s web with concentrical circles connected by spokes, thus having everything in contact with everything else. This kind of summarizes our age, this is how we live: there’s no single centre, any point in the net having the potential to be the centre.

This is our age. But the previous age, what symbol summing it up was there? – I’d say the machine was the archetype of the bygone era. The past 100-200 years had the machine as its leading hieroglyph. And as for science fiction, the subject of this chapter, the SF I grew up with had a wealth of machines: space ships, soaring cars and robots, even whole cityscapes of mighty machines. Everything you did could be done better by machines, that was the gist.

This epoch is now ending. Now we live in subtler times, venturing out in conceptual landscapes instead of tangible ones, moving towards brainbuilding instead of bodybuilding. The computer is now a bigger status symbol than the car. However, dwelling for a moment in the land of machines we soon encounter Jünger himself there. He always had a keen eye for machines, like these lines in ”Feuer und Blut” (”Fire and Blood”) from 1925:
The machine is beautiful. And it has to be beautiful for the lover of life in all its fullness and violence. (...) Haven’t we noticed that when seeing a bullet train flashing through the landscape, race drivers heading for the straight after the banked curve; when metal birds have circled over our cities and when in large glass-covered halls we’ve been standing between crank shafts and shining flywheels, with the mercury pillars of the manometers rising and falling and the red pointers of the instruments on the wall trembling – haven’t we noticed that in all these actions there must be an abundance of life, of luxury, of a will of totally transforming life into power.
This machine poetry is reminscent of Thea von Harbou in her novel ”Metropolis”, which surfaced at the same time. However she was more of a sceptic, seeming to have an aversion against the world of machines while Jünger, here at least, embraced it.

3. Technical Encounters

As we recently saw the Jünger of the 20’s was romancing the shapes and forms of the machine world. But he soon changed his attitude, becoming more of a sceptic. When in France 1940 he sees some tank wrecks he clearly is a stranger: ”I crept inside them and as always I have to admit that I don’t feel at ease inside these creations smelling of oil, petrol and rubber.” [the War Diary, May 29, 1940]

So then, the author of ”Der Arbeiter”, envisioning a totally industrialized world, doesn’t like machines...? Maybe his techno-romance, as long it lasted, was more of the theoretical kind. He wasn’t a hands-on practical man. In the First World War he preferred bayonet and sabre, only grudgingly accepting the more technical weapons of handgrenades and machine guns. Mines for its part he avoided. And as for cars he never learned to drive, as far as I’m informed.

You could say: the young Jünger loved machines and what they represented but then the love abated. But he could still write technologically credible science fiction, well into the post war years. ”Eumeswil” for instance appeared in 1977 when he was over 80.

And speaking of his personal distaste for machines and his love of ”natural” technology there was one old artifact he came to adore: the hour glass, dedicating a whole book to them (”Das Sanduhrbuch”, 1954). In his war diary we find these lines on the subject:
This object [= the hour glass] suits me well when the presence of mechanical things becomes unbearable, especially during conversations, reading sessions, meditations and studies, whose length you don’t want to measure to the minute – instead letting the sand in a little glass pour out. The hourglass time is another one, connected to life: no peals are heard here, no hand is moving. It’s time that flows, passes, runs off – untightened, unrhythmisized time. [Paris, February 16, 1944]

Coda

Jünger was a complex man. You could find a lot of complaining in his late diary of how modern technology has destroyed the earth. At the same time he liked watching TV, he liked to travel by jet to distant countries and he acknowledged the complexity and heroism of the Apollo project, putting a man on the moon.

He gave us his visions of technology in his novels "Heliopolis", "The Glass Bees" and "Eumeswil". He knew how to create a futuristic feel but his works seem to transcend the SF genre. Jünger was a genre of his own.

Bibliographical note: as for the novels mentioned in this essay "Heliopolis" hasn't been translated into English. But the other two can be listed thus:

. The Glass Bees (Gläserne Bienen, 1957. Noonday Press, New York 1960)
. Eumeswil (Eumeswil, 1977. Marsilio Publishers, 1994)

As you can see I have no information about where Marsilio Publishers are based. Does any one know? England or the US?
